England & Wales - Increase in child abduction in England and Wales

In April 2012, Lord Justice Thorpe, the Head of International Family Justice for England and Wales reported a 96% increase in new child abduction cases in 2011 as compared to 2010. Lord Justice Thorpe reported that 180 news cases were referred to his Office that year and that it is anticipated there will be 240 new cases in 2012 based on statistics up to April 2012. There are unfortunately no statistics as to the number of international cases dealt with by all courts in England and Wales on an annual basis, but from a practitioners' perspective the volume of cases certainly seems to be increasing on an annual basis.
