Chafin v Chafin - an intervention

David Williams and Jacqueline Renton of 4 Paper Buildings, together with Timothy Scott QC of 29 Bedford Row, instructed by The Centre for Family Law and Practice, have filed an amicus curiae brief in the United States Supreme Court (in support of the Respondent) in the case of Chafin v Chafin. Professor Marilyn Freeman (a door tenant of 4 Paper Buildings) is co-Director of The Centre for Family Law and Practice.

Chafin v Chafin is an important case in the field of international child abduction. The United States Supreme Court will determine whether a parent’s appeal against a return of the child under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction 1980 is moot if the appeal is issued after the child has been returned.

Oral argument was heard by the United States Supreme Court on 5th December 2012 and judgement is awaited.
