Gabrielle Jan Posner, Barrister, 2 Gray's Inn Square Chambers. Where do the concepts 'kinship assessment' and 'viability assessment' come from, what do they mean and why do they appear to have different meanings for different practitioners? In this article the author searches for these terms in every available authority in an attempt to pin them down and considers the problems with both as they stand currently. The origins are in social work practice but their application and practice is varied to such a degree that the quality is not reliable and viability assessments seem to carry a value judgment with them. There is a clear need for definition and guidance. For the full article see June Fam Law.
