(Nottingham County Court; Mr Recorder Timothy Scott QC; 24 July 2006)
The wife, who had entered into an arranged marriage, claimed that she had suffered 4 months of near imprisonment and bullying living in the home of her parents-in-law which had ended only when her father arrived to secure her release. Thereafter she had suffered depression for many months. The wife sued the mother in law for harassment under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.
The wife had endured 4 months of misery and humiliation. She was awarded damages of £35,000 for treatment which included being forced to cut her hair, in contravention of her religious obligations, having her skin bleached, a 17-hour daily regime of housework and severely restricted contact with the outside world, including her family.
