NYAS: representing children and rule 9.5

Elena Fowler and Debbie Singleton. The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) is a unique 'not for profit' children's charity which offers socio-legal advice, information, signposting and advocacy services to children and young people, parents, carers and professionals, anywhere in England and Wales. The charity works to support the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, serving children and young people aged 0-25. NYAS is committed to Art 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

NYAS receives funding from the DFES, and the National Assembly of Wales and is commissioned to provide children's rights and advocacy services by local authorities, voluntary agencies, the NHS and the Youth Justice Board. NYAS also receive funding for specific projects and we are grateful for grants and donations. NYAS offer services to children and young people who are looked after or in need. They may be living away from home in Young Offender Institutions, Secure Training Centres, local authority residential units, adolescent psychiatric units, with foster carers or they may be still living with their family. There is a national free phone helpline service staffed by telephone advocates that between them speak nine languages. They can also be contacted by text, or direct chat through the website. If the telephone advocate cannot resolve the issue the young person will be offered a local advocate who will quickly contact them and arrange a meeting.
