The year 2006 marks the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (IAML) which now numbers some 450 Fellows in 28 countries worldwide. Its primary objective is to improve international family law practice in all parts of the world, achieved by creating a global network of specialist practitioners, recognised by their peers as the leading experts in their jurisdictions. Through this network it can provide Fellows with updated information on national and international developments, offer advice and assistance to the wider public, promote law reform and, where possible, harmonise the law from country to country. England is well represented. The IAML is very keen to encourage individuals from countries which are under-represented or which have no representation at all, and may waive the strict requirements relating to the percentage of family law work done if all other criteria are met. It is particularly keen, for example, to bring in practitioners from the new EU countries and also from Central and South America, Africa and India, and it is actively recruiting in those areas. The next European meeting is to be held in Krakow from 25-28 April 2007 and the meeting after that will be in Rome from 2-5 April 2008. The next Main IAML venue is St Petersburg from 4-8 September 2007. Further information about the IAML can be found at www.iaml.org. See November Fam Law for the full news story.
