On 30 August 2016, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, signed the instrument of ratification of the USA to the 2007 Hague Child Support and Maintenance Convention. This had been eagerly awaited for several yeas and follows much hard work by US family lawyers, by the Hague Convention on Private International Law, and by many others.

In Al-Jeffery v Al-Jeffery (Vulnerable Adult: British Citizen) [2016] EWHC 2151 (Fam), Holman J has confirmed for the first time that the High Court can exercise an inherent protective jurisdiction over a vulnerable British adult on the basis of their nationality, even if they are not habitually resident in England and Wales.

Seventeenth century Chinese porcelain is not the obvious starting point for an important case on ownership of chattels. However, it was the context for the Chancery Division to consider the effect of s 188 of the Law of Property Act 1925 in Butler v Butler [2016] EWHC 1793 (Ch) (HHJ Simon Barker QC, sitting as a judge of the High Court). It provides a very useful examination of how this section works.
