Children's social work reform inquiry launched

The Education Committee has launched an inquiry on social work reform based on a memorandum from the Department for Education outlining the Government’s approach.

The Committee is accepting written submissions on the Government’s approach to children’s social work reform outlined in the memorandum. It is anticipated that comments on its content, focus and breadth will guide the focus of further Committee work in this area. The deadline for written submissions is Friday 4 March 2016.

Neil Carmichael, Chair of the Education Committee said:

'I’m pleased that as a Committee we have been able to encourage the Department for Education to set out their approach on children’s social work reform. This memorandum outlines the Government’s work in a number of areas including training and development, career pathways, and workforce skills and capacity. There is significant talk of a recruitment and retention crisis in children’s social work and as a Committee we want to hear the views of social work professionals and others on the Government’s actions on this matter as well as on the other areas set out in this memorandum. This evidence will help to inform the Committee’s future work on this important subject and to help us to ensure the Government really is delivering better support and outcomes for children.'
