The Cohabitation Conference

Practical training dealing with modern issues

John Wilson QC will be joined by a sterling team of speakers to chair this 1-day conference that will bring clarity to all the complexities surrounding cases involving unmarried couples.

  • Speakers: Charles Hale QC, Rhys Taylor, James Pirrie, John Wilson QC, Andrzej Bojarski
  • Location: Copthorne Tara Hotel, Kensington, LONDON , W8 5SR (GPS W8 5SY)
  • Date: 30 November 2016 09:30 - 17:00
£220.00 + VAT - Book your place using the booking form.

Recent demographic trends mean that family lawyers increasingly need to acquire or sharpen their contentious property litigation and dispute resolution skills.

The increase in the incidence of unmarried relationships, and their subsequent breakdown, calls for familiarity with general equitable principles, the Civil Procedure Rules and a different mindset to that required to run a financial remedy case.

For unmarried parents, there are the additional complexities of Schedule 1 to the Children Act 1989 and child maintenance issues arising under the Child Support Act 1991.

The Cohabitation Conference draws all the threads together in one essential day of practical training and updating. Chaired by John Wilson QC, leading counsel for the successful Claimant in the recent case of Montalato v Popat [2016] EWHC 810 (Ch), and a team of expert speakers, the day aims to provide family lawyers with the necessary technical know how and confidence to successfully bring and defend such claims.

Leading experts will deliver this packed and informative programme providing training on:
  • TOLATA cases, the law and putting it in to practice
  • Schedule 1 to the Children Act 1989
  • Child maintenance issues
  • Ownership of personal property, including bank accounts
  • Alternative forms of dispute resolution, including arbitration, early neutral evaluation and mediation

What is included?
  • Expert guidance and advice from a specialist team of speakers
  • Fantastic networking opportunities
  • Comprehensive notes that can be referred to long after the event
  • Intermediate- to advanced-level update training
  • 5 hours, 15 minutes CPD
  • Lunch and refreshments
Plus, 20% discount on selected Family Law products and services.

Who should attend?

All legal practitioners (including family, private client and chancery lawyers), mediators, accountants and financial experts who advise and/or represent unmarried couples.
