Low Pay Commission consults on national minimum wage

Solicitor, Veale Wasbrough Vizards

The Low Pay Commission (LPC) opened a consultation on 19 July 2015, requesting opinions in relation to the government's proposed changes to the national minimum wage (NMW) and the introduction of the national living wage (NLW).

In a recent article, Budget - how does it affect employment law?, we reported on the proposed introduction of a NLW as part of the government's budget.

The consultation is seeking views in particular on the existing rates of the NMW and what effect the NLW may have on workers. The consultation is also covering compliance and enforcement issues.

The consultation closes on 25 September 2015. The LPC has been asked to produce a report by February 2016 on what the future rate of the NMW should be. It will also be  compiling a report on the level of the NMW by October 2016.
