Are student nurses and student midwives 'workers'?

The draft Protected Disclosures (Extension of Meaning of Worker) Order 2015 has been presented to Parliament.

In order to take account of the 'employment-like' relationship between student nurses and healthcare providers during periods of work experience, the draft Order proposes to amend the definition of worker in the whistleblowing legislation to include student nurses and student midwives.

Best practice

The amendments are due to come into force on 6 April 2015, allowing student midwives and student nurses the right to protection under whistleblowing legislation.
