On 5 April 2015, the government published new guidance on adoption leave and pay. The guidance considers the recent changes which came into effect on 5 April 2015.

These include:

  • adoption leave becomes a 'day 1 right'
  • statutory adoption pay will be paid at the earnings related rate in the first six weeks
  • new groups of parents will qualify for adoption leave and pay
  • adopters will be entitled to take time off work to attend adoption meetings
The guidance can be accessed via gov.uk.

Best practice

Employers should ensure that they familiarise themselves with the changes to adoption leave and pay that came into effect on 5 April 2015 and amend their policies accordingly.
