Tony Beswetherick Barrister

Tony graduated from Oxford University with a first class degree in modern history. He was CPE, Hardwicke and Sunley scholar at Lincoln's Inn and was called to the bar in 2003. Tony joined 20 Essex Street in November 2013, having previously practised at Enterprise Chambers since 2006. Prior to this he worked as an employed barrister in the Advocacy Group of Denton Wilde Sapte, a major international law firm. Tony is ranked by The Legal 500 (2010-2013) as a "leading junior" in the field of insolvency.

Tony regularly acts for receivers as well as liquidators, administrators, and trustees in bankruptcy in contentious and non-contentious insolvency matters. He has been instructed in relation to a number of high-profile insolvencies, including in relation to Aquascutum Limited (for the liquidators), Zavvi Retail Limited (for the liquidators), the Chez Gerrard restaurant chain (for the administrators), the Homebuy group (for the administrators), Portsmouth FC (for the administrators), and the Setanta group (for the administrators).

He has a busy commercial law practice and is currently representing the licensees of a Georgian oil well in a substantial dispute over the works carried out at the site. Other recent cases include a claim in the Commercial Court for rectification of two bank guarantees (guaranteeing £40 million each), a claim for fraudulent trading brought in the Chancery Division arising out of alleged VAT 'carousel' fraud, and a substantial claim in professional negligence against a firm of solicitors arising out of advice given to a company which entered liquidation due to the misfeasance of a director. Recent banking instructions include advising upon claims against financial institutions relating to mis-sold interest rate swap and similar products.
