Edward Bennett

Edward Bennett Barrister and General Editor
Harcourt Chambers

Edward’s practice incorporates all areas of chambers work, particularly family law, court of protection, community care and mental health. He has particular experience and interest in cases concerning international family law including the international protection of incapacitated adults.

To date he has been instructed to appear in family (including international child abduction, international relocation, international child maintenance, international adoption, forced marriage, paternity disputes, public and private law children and financial remedies), court of protection (welfare and financial), community care and charities cases. He also has a niche interest in art, cultural heritage and peerage law.

Before coming to the Bar, Edward trained as a solicitor in the London and Prague offices of Allen & Overy, spent a year in the Court of Appeal as Judicial Assistant to the Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Lloyd and a further year as Legal Adviser to the Head of International Family Justice for England & Wales, the Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Thorpe.
He has been General Editor of the International Family Law Journal since January 2015 and, in November 2013, was the only lawyer invited to speak at the 10th Anniversary Conference of the Victoria Climbie Foundation.

In February 2014, he was one of three Rapporteurs to the Family Justice Council’s biennial interdisciplinary national conference with ‘Family Justice Redefined ?’ as its theme, co-edited the papers and co-drafted the ‘conclusions and recommendations’, published as a special issue in the Family Law journal in May 2014.

His article, published in the Family Law journal, on international judicial collaboration in international family cases, was expressly endorsed and approved by Cobb J in N v K (No.2) [2014] EWHC 507 (Fam); [2013] Fam Law 1530.

He has been instructed as an expert witness for overseas courts in family cases with an international dimension.
